This is my first attempt at a guide, so give me some slack. A lot of you out there don’t even give any credit to those who try and help.
I have decided to make a guide. I take no credit for this, this is just what I did and plan to do. I am not yet a very high level, but I will eventually finish this guide. I give credit to Gevurah, Yralyn, and a few others. Now, without further ado, my guide.
(Do NOT follow this guide exactly. This is merely a base guide to give you ideas.)
This guide is only for dagger thieves, so look over at other guides for other things. I base it on levels because 1, this is what I did. 2, Even if you have different stats, these are pretty good areas to level at.
Champs Thief to Assassin leveling guide.
First of all, you want to pick your character. Now, this is no stat guide, so look at Gevurah or Yralyns build guides, they're quite useful. You can also look at their leveling guides, if you don't like mine.
Skill descriptions (ABC, non-quest)
Detoxify: Active
Prerequisite: Envenom: 3
Max level: 1
Description: Cures a target of the poison ailment.
My opinion: Really, useless. It's so much better to just buy/find green herbs/pots. If you really want this, but don't want to go past 40, and want certain skills, then buy a belt and stick a poporing card in it. Either get it, or not.
Double attack: Passive
Prerequisite: None
Max level: 10
Description: Enable the chance of attacking twice, it will show in yellow letters instead of white, and no, you won't see a cool move of two attacks, you'll attack normally but it will act as if you hit twice.
Chance chart: Skill level / Chance / Accuracy
1 05% +1
2 10% +2
3 15% +3
4 20% +4
5 25% +5
6 30% +6
7 35% +7
8 40% +8
9 45% +9
10 50% +10
My opinion: Useful as hell skill, max it, unless you're a bow thief going rogue and don't want to buy a hybrid bow to DOUBLE your damage.
Envenom: Active
Prerequisite: None
Max level: 10
Description: A basic thief skill, Attack an enemy with the poison status. It continually reduces HP and reduces defense. Targets vitality affects chance of poisoning. It always takes 10 SP regardless of the skill level, and won't work on boss monsters.
Chance chart: Skill level / Poison chance / Added ATK damage
1 14% 15
2 18% 30
3 22% 45
4 26% 60
5 30% 75
6 34% 90
7 38% 105
8 42% 120
9 46% 135
10 50% 150
My opinion: People say this is the thief's Bash, but really, this is a horrid skill (to me). Compare it, Bash when maxed adds 400% attack, +50 to accuracy, and takes 15 SP. Envenom when maxed, adds 50% Poison chance, and adds 150 damage...Poison is alright, for monsters, because people use green herbs. Now with the quest skill 'Fatal Blow' With Bash 6+ it adds a chance to stun. Stun is far more useful than poison. So, get it for poisons for Assassins, otherwise leave it.
Hiding: Active
Prerequisite: Steal 5
Max level: 10
Description: "Hiding enables the caster to hide beneath the ground," Now, I don't know about digging and hiding, but you automatically disappear, but only you see a shadow. Anyway, Assassin's Cloaking needs level 2. It's a good skill, especially if you want to use Grimtooth (Katars are needed). For Rogues, it's good for Stalk, so either get 9 or 10 for a Rogue, but it's kind of useless past 3 for Assassins.
Chance chart: Skill level / Skill duration / SP consumption
1 30s 1/5s
2 60s 1/6s
3 90s 1/7s
4 120s 1/8s

7 210s 1/11s
8 240s 1/12s
9 270s 1/13s
10 300s 1/14s
My opinion: It's a good skill, get it pretty early so you can escape mobs (Does not work on insects or undead/demon?)
Improve dodge: Passive
Prerequisite: None
Max Level: 10
Description:Permanently increase flee rate, enabling the character to dodge better.
Chance chart: Skill level / +Flee rate (Thief) / +Flee rate (Assassin/Rogue / + Movement speed for SinX
1 3% 4% 1%
2 6% 8% 2%
3 9% 12% 3%
4 12% 16% 4%
5 15% 20% 5%

7 21% 28% 7%
8 24% 32% 8%
9 27% 36% 9%
10 30% 40% 10%
My opinion: Honestly, THE best skill for AGI types ever. With the thief's naturally high flee, and with high agi, this skill is beautiful. ALWAYS max it.
Steal: Active
Prerequisite: None
Max level: 10
Description: Each level increases the chance of stealing an item from a monster. Monster item drop rates are unaffected by the steal skill, meaning you won't lose a drop by using this. Consumes 10 SP regardless of skill level. Steal chance increases at higher skill levels and user's DEX.
SAMPLE Skill builds:
For Assassins, I suggest...
Double attack 10
Improve dodge 10
Envenom 3
Detoxify 1
Steal 5
Hide 2
That'll be job 31. 8 more points left. Add to either Envenom, Steal, or Hide. There really aren't that great active skills for a Thief to kill better...so just get these, unless you want to try something new. However, I think the best thing to get is hide, for grimtooth (it relies on hiding to hit one or multiple enemies).
Rogue's skills:
Double attack 10
Improve dodge 10
Steal 5
Hide 1
Steal 10
Hide 9
This will equal 0 extra points, because envenom/detox is for Assassin's poison skills. Useless in my opinion.
Leveling guide:
Novice Base 1-12ish (for those who want to stay in the novice training area till second job)
Now, when you finish customizing your character’s head and name, click ok, then again when your redirected to the ‘select character screen’. Instead of ignoring the girl you see as soon as you start, talk to her. Pick any one of the options, and talk to her again. She’ll give you a base level.
Now continue east (right). Eventually you’ll see two guards and a portal. Go through it. Then a bit north is a man who will let you pick to go to the novice area, or skip it. ALWAYS go. Unless you have a GARAUNTEED tank from a friend. Otherwise, you’ll have to restart your character. And PLEASE, do not start begging people for zenny and items, and tanks. They will not give you them. They earned their stuff, and they don’t need to waste their time on you.
Once your inside the novice area, go north and you’ll see a blue haired man. Read through his lesson, he’ll give you base and job levels, then go northeast (upright) and talk to the girl with red bun hair. Make sure you read CAREFULLY through it. She gives you extra levels if you do. After that, talk to the kafra and pick ‘about kafra services’.
She’ll give you levels for the first two, after that stop talking to her and head west (left). Talk to the guy who looks like a monk. He’ll teach you First Aid and give you a few levels.
Now go through the far west (left) portal. Talk to the guy on the far side of the screen, he'll give you a free base level, then the girl, she'll give you about 300 pots. Head in, and you’ll get a novice main gauche and a novice guard. Equip them as well as the other novice items you got earlier, and if your not in a field with a bunch of red mushroom monster things, giant grasshoppers, and large bugs, talk to the guy you meet and click the second option. He’ll send you to the hardest room, which, with the pots you got, will be pretty easy. Now, stay away from the large bugs, and kill the grasshoppers and red mushroom things, called Rockers and Spores. If you die, talk to the girl again to be warped back. You'll get 50 extra pots and a free base level.
When you hit Base 12-13 and Job 10, head all the way north and talk to the large guy. He’ll redirect you, and you must talk to the guy to your top left, then the guy directly above you. Take the test, and always say whatever they suggest. Though, try for thief. You can pretty much imagine what personality a thief would have.
There's another way, and I tried it. It worked beautifully, but you must have done what I said (you don't need to kill things) in the novice area. The area I'm talking about is two south of Prontera, and loneranger3003 brought it to my attention. Kill desert wolves, but be careful of mobs. If you want to view exactly what he said, as well as other areas, scroll down a bit. I copied it exactly from what he said.
Now, your in the desert town of Morroc (I hope). Since you have your max job as a novice, head to the top left corner of Morroc and exit. Head once again to the near top left corner, and you should find a pyramid with a warp. Enter it and weave your way through to the Thief area. Find the thief girl and start the quest. The man is directly east of the exit. Kill small mushrooms and get 25 points. Gooey are 1, and Net are 3. Leave once you have exactly 25 points, and head back to the thief guild to complete the quest.
If you choose to leave the training area early, get on another character with lots of money and buy a blade. Then, go back to your novice and transfer the 7 phracon you got from the personality quiz (if you chose what he said, you won't HAVE to become whatever class he says) and bank it for your other character to upgrade the blade to +7 with. Then, bank the +7 blade and switch to the novice, before taking it out on your novice (if you fully utilized the free levels).
After that, head to the map one south (down) of Prontera, and head west (left) from that map. There, kill the giant grasshoppers exactly like the ones in the training area. This time, they give more exp, but do slightly more damage, until Job 10.
Thief Base 12-15ish
Suggested killings: Anything one north/south of Morroc.
Congratulations! You’re a thief. No, you can’t steal stuff from people. But you can, later from monsters. Hopefully you got thief from the quiz, or you have other characters to buy you a suitable dagger.
Start by killing things one north or one south of Morroc. ALWAYS up Double Attack. Once you think you can handle stronger monsters, sell your loot and buy some armor.
Or you could head to culverts, that works too. Scroll down a bit, I added the information on it. However, be very careful as you're very weak.
Thief Base 15-21ish
Suggested killings: Anything in Payon cave one, OR in culverts 2. Scroll down slightly for the info on how to get there.
Go to the kafra and get a warp to Payon. Save, and go to the top right corner of Payon. Enter the warp and head upleft. You’ll find a clearing with a load of people. Buy pots from the merchants, and go in. Kill the skeletons, run from the zombies, and leave the poporings alone, for now. Eventually, when you have level 10 Double Attack and you’re a pretty high level (I’d say 17 or 18) kill zombies and poporings, until about 21.
Thief Base 21-28ish
Suggested killings: Anything in Culverts level 1-2.
Head to Prontera. Go to the top left corner and talk to the guard inside the building, and sign up. He’ll warp you to this small area, save at the kafra. This will be your main base for awhile, learn to like it.
Sell any loot you might have gotten from Payon caves, refresh your pots, maybe get new armor, and talk to the guard.
Now your in level one. Navigate your way through the first level to the second. Be very careful of the Female / Thief bug mobs. They’re assist, and you’d hate to have that happen. Familiars are aggressive. Try killing as many Tarous as you can, they’re excellent exp. This place is Bot mania, warning.
Thief Base 28-35ish
Suggested killings: Anything in Byalan level 1-2, or continue to kill in Culverts 2, or you can brave level 3. WATCH OUT for Male thief bug mobs.
After you get to level 28, head back to Prontera, and walk to Izlude. Save here, sell any loot you might still have from Culverts, and go northeast. Talk to a sailor at the end of the dock. Go to Byalan island. Go up around the skull, then through and into the cave.
If you can handle Marina’s, great. They’re good exp. But wait till later levels, when your flee kicks in.
Thief Base 35-45ish
Suggested killings: Cookies (Toy Factory 1) or Orc Dungeon 1.
Okay, your 35. First, you have to pick. Toy Factory has little elves (All you want to kill, stay away from the present boxes) and is very good exp, but there isn’t as many monsters and hardly any loot.
There’s also Orc Dungeon, much harder and less exp, but way more monsters and lot’s of loot.
So, for Toy Factory, head back to Izlude and sell all your loot from Byalan. Then get a warp to Al De Beran. Save here, then head to the top right corner. Talk to the fake santa and head to Lutie. Quickly head one map north, then make your way to the top of the map. You’ll see a locomotive toy train and a warp, enter it. Stay here till 45 unless you want to go to OD. (Not as highly recommended)
For Orc Dungeon (OD), head to Prontera, then take the (1700 zenny, ouch) warp to OD. You can’t save here, and it’s expensive to get back. Enter the cave you see, then head to the other side of the small map. Here, be cautious when you enter, and run from mobs.
Thief Base 45-50
Suggested Killings: Cookies or OD.
Stay in TF (Toy factory), or if in OD, head there. (Unless you like the exp or the mobs. I like the place in general, 'unno why.)
Thief Base 50
Suggested Killings: Leaf cats, or head to TF level 2 and kill present boxes. Run from the toy soldiers, Cruisers.
If you have a strong, always-on and kind friend, get him or her to tank you in Ayotaya. Otherwise, get an acolyte to help. Save here. It’s 10000 zenny warp, so try to get a warp from a priest/aco. You probably will never level your base in here, but you’re strong enough anyway to become an Assassin, or Rogue, minus the job levels.
You have to get a Solid Husk, Needle Packet, Empty bottle, Thread spool, and Holy water. I don’t remember the exact quest, so ask around. Then, now with Holy Threads, go one east and keep heading east. Talk to the old man and say yes, then be VERY careful in this dungeon. Run from the aggressive gorillas, and kill Leaf cats. DO NOT attempt this alone. I had problems with these, and I had a lot of health (thanks to expensive equips) and lots of pots.
Thief Base level 50ish
Suggested killings: Leaf cats if you want Job 50.
Alright, by now your probably job 40. If you want to go to job 50 (why I'll never know) then keep killing in Ayotaya, or if in TF, head there.
Now, for Assassins, head to Morrocc. Then, ask around for the location of the assassin's guild, I can't remember. Once there, avoid the sandmen and run in. Take the series of tests, and for god's sake, READ WHAT THEY SAY.
Now, for Rogues, head to Morrocc as well. Then, talk to the kafra and warp to Paros Lighthouse. Head east, and try to find a little stairway heading downward. Now, head down until you find a girl behind a counter. Talk to her, take the quiz, then talk to the guy a floor up. Do the rest of the quest, I have no idea what to do later, I haven't made a Rogue/sin in a long time.
After that, head to Sohees for awhile. Or, head back to OD or TF.
Around 60, you'll get really bored and the exp'll be extremely crappy. Well, you can head to coal mines 2, or look at the Monster Search area in the Database to find anything you can flee and kill pretty nicely, and then of course survive and get good exp!
About 70ish, you can try killing Minorous' in Pyramids. Watch out for all the little critters, they can get annoying or deadly. Be careful, the Minorous hurt like a son of a *****. Good luck! I've never gotten any sin past 60 (because I kept screwing up my build). As this is only a thief guide, you'll have to look at an assassin/rogue guide like Gevurah's over in the Thief/Assassin/Rogue section.
loneranger3003's advice:
1. For Levels 1-12, I've always hunted Baby Desert Wolves after going through the Novice Training. If you are able to equip a decent weapon (i.e. +7 Falcion/Mace/etc.) using the materials provided by the last NPC you meet during the Novice Training. You'll use roughly 90-150 Novice Potions, and you'll level pretty quickly. Also, the Baby Desert Wolves drop Meat occasionally, so you could use those as an alternative healing item.
2. Culverts are a great place to level, but they can be frustrating without the proper equips. Here are some good equips an up and coming Assassin/Rogue might want to consider buying:
-Wooden Armor
-Shoes/Boots
-Muffler
-Guard/Buckler
-Goggles/Nut Shell
Buying some armor will extend your lifespan, and you could face tougher enemies.
3. Also, about Culverts; you can litterly live there until level 30-40, depending if you get bored or not. Go for Plankton and Familiars for a while, then go for Tarou if you got the balls to.
4. Although Assassins and Rogues are known and appreciated for they're strong Flee and Aspd, Vitality cannont be ignored. If you get around 10 Vit at Levels 15-25, facing monsters will become a piece of cake for you to deal with, and you won't have to buy tons of Pots (also, if you want to become a legend in WoE or PvP, you're gonna need at least 15 Vit in total; flee alone just doesn't cut it anymore )
5. Around Levels 40-55, leveling can be tough, and grueling; so here are some places I found for those stuck and frustrated with leveling:
-Toy Factory 1
-Hodes (wherever they may be...)
-Orc Dungeon (the mobs are a great stream of monster, but the exp is decent)
-Louyang (trying running for desperate Mages/Archers)
-Orc Village (if you have the Flee...)
-Payon Caves 3 (you might want to bring a set of pots or an Acolyte)
6. Making Zenny isn't hard folks. Just pick up some junk that monsters drop, sell it when you have the chance, and you can make some serious dough.
7. Once you're an Assassin/Rogue, stick to the area you were just at before you changed your class.
8.
-Dex should be around 20 as a minimum, and if you're still having trouble hitting monsters with that much Dex, then you shouldn't be hunting at that area.
-Agi, Agi, AGI! Its the most important stat, and without it, you're gonna be in some deep crud. This stat should be your main priority to maximize.
-Vit...well I already said what I had to say about Vit...
-Str is good for everything a Thief does just, it should come later in your build.
-Int........well since you're a Thief, and you haven't Transcended, don't bother unless you wanna spam attacks.
9. Be patient, Thieves is a strong and fast class, but you will die a few times.
This is about how much I’ve thought up, so please leave feedback, thankful comments, and or flames. I don’t care, as long as I know I helped a tad bit.
